Principles and Characteristics of Electrodialysis Technology (1) Principles Electrodialysis operates under a direct current (DC) electric field, using potential difference as the driving force and the selective permeability of ion-exchange membranes to enable the migration of anions and cations in solutions toward the anode and cathode, respectively. With alternating arrangements of anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) and cation-exchange membranes (CEMs), multiple compartments are formed. When a salt-containing pharmaceutical intermediate solution flows through these compartments, salt ions (cations passing through CEMs and anions through AEMs) migrate to adjacent concentration compartments under the combined action of the electric field and membrane selectivity, while the pharmaceutical intermediates are retained in the desalination compartments, achieving separation.
